KATIE SMITH MILWAY
Here's a video site on ABC News' Person of the WeeK:
Katie Smith Milway, the author for our Young Author Celebrations:
http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=748476

Katie Smith Milway lived and worked in Africa during the years 1984 – 1993. She says she truly fell in love with the sounds, smells, peoples, and lands. She can remember nights under the stars playing music with herders and their children and afternoons visiting with village women and girls, laughing and munching on roasted crickets. In her book One Hen, she tries to capture the richness of these memories.
The story is based on the life of Kwabena Darko, who, with the help of a small loan, grew into the largest chicken producer in an agriculturally-poor Africa. One Hen attempts to inspire kids to “can-do” compassion; to expand their view about the role they could play in helping themselves and others. Katie says that she delights in teaching kids about the country of Ghana, the setting of the story, and about how kids from different cultures can share the same dreams and paths to achievement.
