Who: Teachers of writing/literacy for grade 3-5 who are Shenandoah Valley Reading Council Members.

What:  Developing Thoughtful Literacy: Writing as communication of thought

Description of  the Project:

This trainer-of-trainers staff development will focus on the development of thoughtful literacy environments within grades three through five.  Participants, from eight school divisions within the Shenandoah Valley Reading Council, will be trained in skills and strategies to develop thoughtful literacy environments that focus on writing as an extension of critical thinking.  The participants of this project will become trainers within their own schools.  Thoughtful literacy instruction will take place in 2008-2009 within individual schools.

Objectives:

What are the objectives of this project?

This project is divided into two phases, training of trainers phase and the implementation phase.

            Training of trainers phase

            Upon completion of a three hour training participants will be able to:

a.       articulate writing as an extension of critical thinking

b.      develop strategies that teach students in grades 3-6 to write the six basic structures (frames) of academic writing

c.       identify and plan for reading/writing integrated instruction

d.      lead staff development within their own schools and school divisions on thoughtful literacy

Implementation phase

            Upon completion of this phase the trainers will have:

a.       conducted staff  development within their  own school divisions on thoughtful

literacy

b.      worked within school building with literacy providers to develop thoughtful

literacy

c.   implement thoughtful literacy activities within grades 3-5 classrooms

How will the project be implemented?

  1. A trainer-of-trainers staff development session will invite teachers from eight school divisions to be trained on “Developing thoughtful literacy: Writing as communication of thought."
  2. Trainers will learn and practice thoughtful literacy strategies to be used with students in grades 3-5 in a 3 hours session.
  3. Trainers will return to their school divisions and disseminate knowledge to colleagues.
  4. Trainers will become advisors to literacy providers within schools on teaching writing frames and integrated writing activities that enhance critical thinking, during the 2008-2009 academic year.
  5. Trainers will reconvene during the fall of 2008 to update on strategies and report on implementation of the project within schools/school divisions

When: March 1, 2008  from 10:00 a.m. until 1 p.m. (meal provided)

How Much: Materials provided.  A small stipend of $, to help defer travel costs, will be paid to all attendees.
